Working with Communities to Keep Kids Safe and Healthy at Riley Hospital for Children

As Indiana's only comprehensive children's hospital, Riley Hospital for Children is recognized across the state and around the country for providing excellence in pediatric diagnosis, treatment and research. An important part of Riley's mission is its long-standing commitment to help children of Indiana grow up to lead healthy, safe and productive lives.

The Riley Community Education and Child Advocacy Department develops education and advocacy programs and resources for children, adolescents, families and professionals for use in their communities. From Fort Wayne to Indianapolis to Evansville, to every community in between, we think of all Hoosier children as "Riley Kids."

Safe Children by providing educational resources to all children and care providers about injury prevention. Resources address the following topics:

  • Fire safety
  • Bike safety
  • Skateboard/In-line skating safety
  • Water safety
  • Playground safety
  • Firearm safety
  • Poison safety
  • Pedestrian safety
  • Scald safety
  • Car safety
  • School bus safety
  • Sun safety
  • Halloween safety
  • Baby walker dangers
  • Violence prevention
  • Emergency number safety

Healthy Children by providing educational resources to encourage healthy habits and to reduce high-risk behaviors that contribute to poor health. Resources address the following topics:

  • Tobacco use prevention and cessation
  • Secondhand smoke
  • Healthy eating
  • Sexually transmitted disease
  • Pregnancy prevention

Strong Families by providing educational resources for all families that encourage positive relationships and a supportive environment for children. Resources address the following topics:

  • Parenting issues
  • Babysitting for children with special needs
  • Self-esteem
  • Sibling support
