Recognized nationally with an Honorable Mention by the Secretary of Transportation's Community Partnership Awards Program, this project provides a resource package to educators statewide interested in planning and presenting a bike and/or pedestrian safety course in local communities to children, ages 6-12. The resource package provides local educators statewide with guidelines, course resources, and teaching materials.
Moving Special Kids Safely

A model program, based on the department's research study, has been piloted for replication by children's hospitals and rehabilitation centers nationwide. A video, manual, and slide presentation are available to assist partners in developing a program to provide children with disabilities access to adapted bikes and bike safety training.
Bike and Pedestrian Safety Course Trainings

Training workshops are provided to community educators of all ages on how to plan and present bike and pedestrian safety courses for children from preschool through grade 6.

Burn Education and Prevention
Tiller 7 Safe House

Fully restored 60-foot long tiller ladder truck supports a two-story fire safety house. This mobile fire escape house is the only one of its kind. Recognized nationally by the National Safety Council with an Award of Commendation as an outstanding statewide fire safety education program and locally with a CASPER Award from the United Way of Central Indiana, the Tiller 7 Safe House visits communities across the state to teach preschoolers and early elementary school age children fire safety prevention and evacuation skills.
Preschool Learn Not to Burn

Orientation workshops are offered to preschool educators across
Indiana to use the National Fire Protection Association's Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program as part of the Healthy Child Care Indiana initiative. A statewide network of super trainers are available to conduct orientation workshops that introduce childcare providers to the dangers of fire and to teaching strategies and resources. Over 600 childcare providers have participated in the Orientation workshops.
Playground Safety

In 1997, an estimated 211,000 children ages 14 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for playground equipment-related injuries. A slide program presentation focusing on the twelve leading hazards on playgrounds is available as an education program to guide teachers and community leaders in developing or evaluating safe and accessible playgrounds.

Kiwanians in Direct Support (KIDS) for Riley
A collaboration between the Indiana District of Kiwanis International and Riley Hospital for Children, this initiative provides four different volunteer opportunities for Kiwanis club members to provide direct support to Riley Hospital through:
- Kiwanis-EMSC Medical Bag Project,
- the Bike Safety Committee,
- the NICU Welcome Desk, and
- Reach Out Indiana (Kiwanians provide services, including transportation and childcare for siblings, to families of Riley patients).
